Time To Teach

Creating a Warm and Inclusive Classroom for the Holiday Season

The holiday season is a magical time of year, but it can also be tricky to navigate in a classroom filled with students from diverse backgrounds. While some students may be bursting with excitement for celebrations at home, others may experience stress or feel left out. That’s why it’s so important to create a warm, inclusive environment that celebrates kindness, togetherness, and the spirit of giving—all while respecting the unique traditions and beliefs of every student.

Here are some thoughtful, inclusive ways to make the most of the holiday season in your classroom this December.

1. Focus on Universal Themes

Rather than centering activities around specific holidays, focus on themes that everyone can relate to, like kindness, gratitude, community, and the changing seasons. These universal ideas allow all students to participate without feeling excluded.

Ideas for the Classroom:

  • Create a “Season of Kindness” bulletin board where students can share acts of kindness they’ve seen or done.
  • Read winter-themed books or stories about giving and generosity. For older students, consider short stories or poetry that explore universal human values.
  • Have a discussion or writing activity around the question: “What does this time of year mean to you?”

2. Celebrate Cultural Diversity

The holiday season is a great time to teach students about different cultures and traditions. By highlighting the beauty of diversity, you can create an atmosphere of curiosity and respect.

Ideas for the Classroom:

  • Invite students (and their families, if possible) to share their traditions, foods, or stories from this time of year. For students who don’t celebrate holidays, encourage them to share something meaningful about their winter routines.
  • Create a “World of Traditions” display where students research and present winter traditions from around the globe.
  • Incorporate music, art, or literature from different cultures to highlight the richness of global celebrations.

3. Give Back as a Class

The holiday season is a wonderful time to teach students about the joy of giving. Service projects help foster empathy and a sense of community while making a real impact.

Ideas for the Classroom:

  • Organize a class project to give back, such as collecting canned goods for a local food bank, making cards for nursing homes, or gathering supplies for animal shelters.
  • For younger students, create a “Kindness Countdown,” where the class completes one act of kindness each day leading up to winter break.
  • Older students can write essays or create presentations about the importance of helping others during the holiday season.

4. Make Time for Reflection

The end of the year is the perfect opportunity for students to reflect on their growth and set goals for the future. Reflection activities can help students feel proud of their accomplishments and excited about what’s ahead.

Ideas for the Classroom:

  • Have students create “gratitude snowflakes” by writing one thing they’re thankful for on each “branch” of a paper snowflake.
  • Ask students to write a letter to their future selves, sharing what they’ve learned this year and their hopes for the next one.
  • Create a “Year in Review” class project, where students highlight their favorite memories, lessons learned, or achievements from the past year.

5. Create a Cozy Classroom Atmosphere

Winter is a time for coziness, and a few small touches can transform your classroom into a warm, inviting space that students will love.

Ideas for the Classroom:

  • String up soft, white lights or hang snowflakes cut from paper to create a winter wonderland.
  • Play instrumental music or soft holiday tunes during quiet work times to create a peaceful ambiance.
  • Set aside time for low-key, calming activities, like reading, drawing, or journaling, to help students relax during a busy season.

6. Include Everyone in the Fun

The holiday season is a great time for class bonding, but it’s important to make sure everyone feels included. Focus on activities that bring the class together, regardless of individual beliefs or traditions.

Ideas for the Classroom:

  • Host a “Winter Wishes” activity, where students write anonymous, encouraging notes for their classmates.
  • Plan a winter-themed trivia game or scavenger hunt that celebrates the season without focusing on specific holidays.
  • Create a class “time capsule” to open at the end of the school year, filled with students’ favorite moments, drawings, and reflections from December.

The holiday season offers endless opportunities to teach kindness, celebrate diversity, and build a sense of community in your classroom. By focusing on universal values and creating inclusive, meaningful activities, you can ensure that every student feels valued and respected during this special time of year.

What are your favorite ways to celebrate the holiday season in your classroom? Share your ideas—we’d love to hear them! ❄️✨
