Rules posted on walls are decoration. Expectations taught like academic content — modeled, practiced, revisited — become how the room actually runs. The strongest version includes students in shaping them, because people follow rules they helped create.
Component 3: Consistent response
When prevention misses, teachers need a calm, graduated, dignified way to respond — one that handles everything from a side conversation to open defiance without office referrals or power struggles. Predictability, not harshness, is what changes behavior.
Component 4: Classroom environment
Seating, sightlines, traffic patterns, and supply access quietly prevent dozens of problems a day. Your room is either working for you or against you; it's never neutral.
Component 5: Relationships
Connection is the multiplier on everything above. Students accept correction from adults they trust — and trust is built through deliberate, daily moves with every student, including (especially) the hard-to-reach ones.
